Culture of Asian American

Introduction

Asian American societies have recently been considered as the fastest-growing ethnic

population that surpasses other immigrants. This has led to this population consisting of 6% of

the American population. The diversification of these groups can be traced to how and why they

migrated to America (Mannur & Isaac, 2015). For example, the Filipino and the Chinese

migration started in 1847, with most of them seeking formal education because of the available

scholarships in America. California gold discovery also attracted more Chinese into the country,

whereas the Japanese were more concerned with agribusiness and horticulture (Mannur & Isaac,

2015). Mixed cultures have evolved due to this migration, with each of these groups having

different historical backgrounds. Therefore, the main purpose of this prompt is to explore Lisa

Lowe's concepts of heterogeneity and multiplicity and how they reflect on Chinese immigration

and the Japanese American internment in cultural diversity.

Heterogeneity

Lisa Lowe articulates heterogeneity and multiplicity as conceptualization tools on the

Asian American cultural differences (Lowe, 1996). The scholar defines heterogeneity as the

groups' pluralism, that is, diversification and the bounded category on differential relationships.

This is drawn from the generational relations in the immigrants' origins and the propelling

reasons behind migration (Lowe, 1996). Asian American heterogeneous is a destabilizing

strategy that is more dominant in discursive social construction and determinations of Asian

Americans as part of this group. According to Lowe, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the

Asian American population was being managed by various considerations, which were important

for both the citizens and the immigrants. They included the exclusion acts, quotas, citizenship

bars, internment, which racialized Asian Americans into becoming part of the homogeneous
