k Evolution of Thought k k
Although I feel I have a vast Information Technology (IT) background, I found I was not as
k k k k k k k k k k k k k k k k
kwell versed in data modeling, database management, ERDs, or the importance of a nurse

kinformaticist's role or how that role impacted the health system. In the Emergency Department

kscenario, I found myself wanting to have a “waiting room” block that would be used for all the

kwaiting times. However, I found this was not the correct way. Once I understood the workflow

kdiagrams provide gateways of travel if you will throughout a task. Understanding this key concept

kregarding the ED scenario, I was able to fix my error so that each step had a proper gateway.

Creating the Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) seemed a bit easier as I was familiar with
k k k k k k k k k k k k k k
kdatabases, primary keys, and foreign key terminology. However, the crows-feet connection did
k k k k k k k k k k k
ktake some time for me to fully grasp along with cardinality and ordinality. The diagrams of the
k k k k k k k k k k k k k k k k
kERD cardinality I found very helpful along with the ERD training video [ CITATION Bal \l 1033 ].

kBeing able to follow along with the video when outlining my ERD was very helpful.

Baldazzi (2013), put the concepts into easy-to-understand and learn more about creating a

It was eye-opening to see how I’ve evolved from the beginning of the class to now and I

khave a better understanding of data modeling, database management, ERDs, and how important
