Ergonomics is an essential puzzle piece in creating comfortable, body-

focused, accessible workplace environments. Specifically in healthcare,

ergonomics plays an important role to structure effective workspaces adapted for

a variety of physical and cognitive capabilities to further provide essential staff and

patient support (McBride, 2022). Furthermore, Commandeur (2020) states that

ergonomics places a heavy emphasis on “methods to reduce fatigue by designing

tasks so that they fall within peoples’ work capacities.” By understanding the

layout, equipment and human capacity of a workplace, ergonomics can influence

a decrease in unnecessary workplace stress while promoting staff and/or patient

comfortability and task efficiency. Lastly, ergonomics cannot be executed to its full

potential without evaluating the human factors component of its diagram to

provide comprehensive user-centered designs.

In my current workplace as an outpatient nurse, the execution of ergonomic

architecture heavily influences the quality of care I deliver to patients as a

healthcare provider. Daily tasks include providing pre-op and post-op teaching,

requiring extensive documentation in Epic (EHR system). In addition, the physical

ergonomic conditions of the workplace include furniture layout, EHR system,

spatial/proximity (e.g., room dimensions), breakroom design, computer
