1. Discuss the concept of organizational agility and an organization's capacity to manage and
respond to change.

Organizational agility has become a critical characteristic for survival and competitiveness in today’s
fast-paced, globalized, and technologically driven business environment. According to Mwenje &
Tatenda Matongo (2024), organizational agility refers to an organization’s ability to adapt its
processes, strategies, resources, and production lines in response to changes in the market or external
environment. While scholars have not reached a unified definition, agility generally involves the
capacity to predict, react to, or create environmental change. For instance, some define agility as the
ongoing development of communication, individuals, and teams, while others emphasize factors
such as continuous improvement, continuous delivery, team maturity, and people flexibility (Mwenje
& Tatenda Matongo, 2024).

A key aspect of organizational agility is the ability to make timely, effective, and sustained
organizational changes. Mwenje & Tatenda Matongo (2024) highlight that agility is not merely
about reacting to change but also about foreseeing future opportunities and capitalizing on them
quickly. This forward-looking capability enables organizations to remain relevant and competitive,
especially in industries like telecommunications, where technological advancements occur rapidly.

Closely related to agility is an organization’s capacity for change. Mwenje & Tatenda Matongo
(2024) define change capacity as the ability of a company to produce outcomes that match
environmental or organizational evolution, either by reacting to changes (adaptation) or by initiating
changes (pro-action), and successfully implementing the transition. This capacity is essential for
agility because an organization cannot be agile if it lacks the internal mechanisms to plan, execute,
and sustain change.

The study by Mwenje & Tatenda Matongo (2024) empirically demonstrates that change capability is
positively and significantly correlated with organizational agility. For example, variables such as
having a well-developed change capability, a strong future focus, a change-friendly identity, flexible
resources, flexible reward systems, and the ability to manage multiple change initiatives
simultaneously all show statistically significant relationships with agility. Factor analysis in the study
confirmed that these variables are highly desirable, with all communalities above 0.7, indicating that
they explain a substantial portion of the variance in organizational agility.

Moreover, Mwenje & Tatenda Matongo (2024) emphasize that change capability alone is
insufficient without effective leadership. Leadership traits such as encouraging innovation, sharing
leadership activities, developing leaders at all levels, and fostering a shared purpose ignite change
capability, which in turn drives organizational agility. The study found a strong correlation between
shared leadership and organizational agility characteristics, including innovation encouragement and
vertical information sharing.

In conclusion, organizational agility is the overarching ability to adapt proactively and reactively to
environmental shifts, while change capacity provides the internal infrastructure—such as processes,
resources, and culture—to execute those adaptations. Together, they enable organizations to survive
and thrive in dynamic markets. As Mwenje & Tatenda Matongo (2024) note, organizations that
develop both strong leadership and change capability are better positioned to become agile entities
and endure over time.
