Religious traditions have always influenced views on family. The older Gujarati
community is still against divorce or live-in relationships. However, times have changed.
Today’s younger generation spends more time in education, so there is a trend towards
marrying later in life. Nowadays, they also have more financial independence, hence
having a husband or wife may not be their priority. This may be one of the reasons
why many youngsters prefer to stay single. Arranged marriages are not as common as
they used to be. The current generation prefers to find their own spouse. Social media
enables them to meet potential partners from all over the world.
