Complementary or Integrative Health (CIH) Intervention

Vision

A complementary intervention that I propose in using is herbal medicine. Since the Stone

Age, the community has relied on this kind of medicine since it has proven to be effective.

Divination, spiritualism, and herbalism make up the three tiers of this holistic health care

approach that is African traditional medicine. The Zambians choose to use natural therapies like

probiotics and herbal products that benefit the human body over utilizing synthetic drugs that

have terrible adverse effects, including death. The usage of a traditional healer is significant to

Zambians. He or she provides medical care in the community where they live utilizing herbs,

minerals, animal parts, incantations, and other techniques based on local traditions and beliefs

(Josephine Ozioma & Antoinette Nwamaka Chinwe, 2019).

The Zambians will benefit most from utilizing this intervention because they have been

doing holistic medicine for a long time. There is never a complaint about a scarcity of herbal

medicine in an African community since they have easy access to it. Unlike synthetic drugs,

where a scarcity is always a possibility.

Implementation

The traditional healer of the village will collaborate with the project manager and medical

staff to successfully conduct this intervention since he is informed about the plants that can treat

or assist Zambians who have malaria. According to WHO, herbal treatments are the most

popular form of traditional medicine and 70%-80% of the region has used a for as primary health

care. The Chinese herb Artemisia annua has been found effective against resistant malaria and

could create a breakthrough in preventing 1 million deaths annually WHO, 2023).

The medical staff will chat with the villagers who received treatment from this traditional

healer to learn what ailments they had in the past and whether or not this healer was able to cure

them. Then some research needs to be done on the plants to ensure that these plants are safe for

them to consume.

It appears that traditional medicine is cost effective as it appears not to cost as much

money as conventional drugs. It’s reported that out of 417 participants, 73% of participants

spend <R100 ($5.33) per month on herbal remedies and another 17% spend <R250 ($13.32) per

month. Moreover, 56% of families were reported as spending <R100 ($5.33) per year on herbal

remedies, and an additional 31% spent <R250 ($13.32) per year (Hughes et al., 2022).

Conclusion

The team and I are eager to see how these recommendations are implemented since we

have high hopes that using ITNs, and traditional medicine can significantly reduce Zambia's

death rates. Participants on this humanitarian mission will need to be aware of and respectful of

the Traditional Healer's and natural medicine's crucial roles in the provision of healthcare

services.
