 QUESTION 1

1.1. Differentiate between the curriculum offerings for Grade R and those of Grades 1 to 3.

The curriculum offerings for Grade R differ significantly from those for Grades 1 to 3, primarily in
terms of pedagogical approach, content integration, and assessment practices.

Grade R follows a play-based, integrated curriculum where learning occurs through structured and
unstructured play activities. The focus is on developing holistic skills – social, emotional, physical,
and cognitive – without formal subject divisions. In contrast, Grades 1 to 3 introduce a more
subject-oriented curriculum (e.g., Home Language, Mathematics, Life Skills), with increasing
emphasis on literacy and numeracy outcomes (GRL2601, Study Guide, p. 23).

Assessment differs markedly. Grade R uses continuous, observational assessment to track
developmental milestones, with no formal tests or grades. Grades 1 to 3, while still formative, begin
to include formal assessment tasks, recording tools, and progression requirements (GRL2601, Study
Guide, p. 24).

Time allocation and structure vary. Grade R has a flexible daily programme with longer free-play
periods. Grades 1 to 3 follow a more fixed timetable with dedicated periods for each learning area,
requiring increased learner attention and task completion (GRL2601, Study Guide, p. 26).

Teacher roles differ: Grade R practitioners facilitate play and model behaviours, while Grade 1–3
teachers increasingly act as direct instructors, introducing systematic phonics, number concepts, and
written tasks (GRL2601, Study Guide, p. 27).

1.2. Describe the floor space in which grade R activities can be conducted.

The floor space for Grade R activities must be carefully planned to support play-based learning,
safety, and developmental needs. According to the study guide, an ideal Grade R floor space
includes the following features:

The space should be approximately 2–3 square metres per child, allowing free movement. It must be
divided into clearly demarcated, well-defined activity areas (e.g., quiet reading corner, fantasy play
zone, block construction area, art and messy play station, and a carpeted space for group ring
activities) (GRL2601, Study Guide, p. 45).

Flooring should be safe, washable, and warm – often a combination of smooth, non-slip tiles (for wet
activities) and soft matting or carpets (for floor play and sitting). The layout must allow easy
supervision by the practitioner from any point (GRL2601, Study Guide, p. 46).

Furniture must be child-sized and moveable, including low shelves for open-access resources, small
tables for fine motor tasks, and floor cushions. The space should have natural light, ventilation, and
access to an outdoor area directly from the indoor floor space (GRL2601, Study Guide, p. 47).

Additionally, safety requirements include rounded edges on furniture, electrical sockets covered, and
clear pathways between activity zones to prevent collisions. The floor space must be arranged to
minimise behavioural conflicts (e.g., placing quiet and noisy zones apart) (GRL2601, Study Guide, p.
48).
