1. Read the following statement: “Some argue for the use of home languages in teaching while
others do not.” Choose one side of the argument (either for or against). In no more than 300
words, explain your position.

 For this statement

I strongly support the use of home languages in teaching. Integrating home languages into the
learning process offers numerous educational benefits and aligns with best practices in inclusive and
effective pedagogy.

Using home languages helps learners grasp complex concepts more easily, especially in the early
stages of education. Research shows that children learn more effectively when they can understand
instructions and content in their native language (Cummins, 2000). This is particularly crucial in
South Africa, where learners often face the challenge of studying in a second or third language. For
example, a Grade 3 learner who is taught Mathematics in isiZulu will likely understand the concepts
more thoroughly than if taught solely in English.

Promoting home languages in teaching helps preserve cultural identity and boosts learners'
confidence. By validating their home language, educators foster a positive self-identity, which
enhances student engagement and reduces feelings of alienation (Brock-Utne, 2001). In a classroom
where Afrikaans is spoken, allowing students to discuss their ideas in their home language helps
them participate actively without the added pressure of language barriers.

Using home languages can improve academic performance in the long run. A study by Heugh (2009)
suggests that learners who are taught in their home language achieve better results in the later stages
of education because they develop stronger literacy and cognitive skills in the language they
understand best.

However, there are some challenges to this approach. One limitation is the lack of qualified teachers
who are proficient in multiple languages (Brock-Utne, 2001). Additionally, schools may face
resource constraints, such as insufficient learning materials in home languages. Lastly, the
dominance of English in higher education and the job market may make it difficult for students to
transition to English-based systems without support.
