Explain using examples what Marx means by base and superstructure
- Marx argues that historical progress occurs through contradictions within economic structures. Society
evolves through changes in the mode of production (like tools, labor and technology) and the relations
of production (such as property ownership and class relations). Together these form the economic
base.
- From this base, a superstructure arises which is made up of legal, political, cultural and ideological
systems. The base determines the superstructure, in other words the economic conditions shape the
institutions and ideas of society

the bourgeoisie and support the capitalist mode of production. These laws are not neutral—they
reflect the material interests of the ruling class

How successful was Marx in resolving the problem of agency and structure in his theory social change.
- He partly solves the problem of agency and structure by connecting the influence of individuals (agency) to
the larger economic system (structure). Agency means conscious choices by individuals or groups that
shape history. Although people are shaped by the mode of production, they can developed class
consciousness where they become aware of their position and take action. Workers move from passive
victims to agents of change, especially though class struggle. However, he still focuses more on the role of
economic structures in shaping society. He allows space for human action but does not fully explore how
individuals act independently of those structures.

In what ways has Marx contributed to our understanding of capitalism
- Marx showed that capitalism is based on class struggle between the bourgeoisie (own the production)
and the proletariat (sell labor to survive). His key contribution is showing how capitalism produces
both exploitation and alienation, where workers are underpaid and can become disconnected from
their labor, product and identity. He also revealed how capitalism represents itself as neutral, but
actually protects bourgeois power though law, rights and state. Importantly, he argued that capitalism
is unstable and contradictory, where crisis’s, profits and class conflict create conditions for its own
downfall. Finally, critics have stated limited in his theory, as he overlooked forced labor in colonial and
informal systems.


Do you think that Marx theory of alienation is more relevant to modern society than his analysis of capitalism as
a system
- I think Marx theory of alienation may feel more relevant because it’s something we can personally
experience, feeling disconnected from our work, others and even ourselves whereas in contrast we
may take the structures of capitalism, with a profit-driven society with class inequality as giving
because it’s just ‘how the society is shaped’. I think we are slowly moving away from traditional class
divisions, inequality and class dynamics but class seems to be deeply embedded in society, as we
always find a way to divide ourselves.

What is the ideal type according to Weber and its limitations
- It’s a conceptual model used to simplify reality and analyze society. It’s not an exact description but
highlights key features of social phenomenon that help sociologist compare societies and identify
patterns. For example: Weber’s ideal type of authority is charismatics, traditional and ration-legal.
- But ideal types are built by focusing on certain aspects and ignore others to create a coherent model.
This means they can be one-sided, simplified and shaped by researchers’ perspectives. They don’t
describe empirical reality and lose focus on complexity and variation. Weber also calls them utopias,
useful for explanation but never fully found in practice.

Critically compare the rise of capitalism to Marx and Weber
- Marx explains the rise of capitalism though changes in material conditions of production. He states
that capitalism is driven by class struggle between bourgeoise and proletariat with contradictions such
as profit-driven exploitation and growing inequality making it unstable. (He argues that material reality
shapes ideas where our culture, political and values are part of a superstructure determined by the
economic base). Weber in contrast focuses on cultural and religious ideas. He argues Calvinist values
like hard work and disciple, encouraged a rational, efficient work ethic which he calls the spirit of
capitalism. This mindset also help capitalism emerge more widely in Protestant societies. Where Marx
sees materials shaping ideas, Weber claims ideas shape materialism. For Weber, capitalism also
reflects a broader trend of rationalization in Western society, where social life becomes increasingly
organized around efficiency, rules, and calculation.

What implication do you think that colonialism had in the formations of capitals in Western Europe and the US
- Colonialism played a huge role in formation and expansion of capitalism in Western Europe and US.
Western nations extracted raw material, forced labor and wealth from colonized regions, which helped
finance industrialization and expand capitalist markets. Colonies served both as sources of cheap input
and controlled markets for Western goods. This extraction enabled rapid capital accumulation,
reinforcing the development of bourgeois economic institutions.
- While Weber focused on internal cultural factors such as Protestantism, he overlooks how colonial
material supported the rise of capitalism. By ignoring their role a, theories of capitalism risk presenting
the West as self-contained when in reality it was deeply shaped by colonial domination and global
exploitation

How does Durkheim’s distinction between mechanical and organic solidarity explain the evolution from traditional to
modern societies?
- Durkheim distinguishes between mechanical and organic solidarity to explain social evolution. Traditional societies
are held together by mechanical solidarity which based on similarity and shared beliefs, also called collective
consensus. There is strong social integration where ideas and tendencies ate common, punitive laws are there to
defend groups value.
- In contrast, in modern societies there is a shift towards organic solidarity, which is based on functional
interdependence and not similarity, due to the complex interdependencies between individuals and groups.
Although independent, still rely on each other roles to corporate.
- This shift explains how social cohesion changes, from uniformity to interdependence in modernity


Are there contemporary examples in Belgian or Western European contexts that reflect both types of solidarity? Think of
the migrant communities in Belgian or Western Europe, do they represent a mechanical or organic solidarity?
- Migrant communities often reflect aspects of mechanical solidarity internally, which is built on shared religion,
language or culture that creates strong bonds though similarity and tradition. I also think that this is done so they
can feel at home and maintain identity in a society where they may otherwise feel marginalized or different.
However, in wider society, migrants are also integrated into a system of organic solidarity where individuals and
groups perform different roles and rely on one other. Many migrants contribute to diverse ways across society,
where construction is a popular job. This shows how different forms of solidarity coexist and shape social cohesion
in different ways.
