Comparative Adjectives


●​ Three main phrases are used in French to convey comparison
○​ Plus + adjectif + que
■​ More (adjective) than…
○​ Moins + adjectif + que
■​ Less (adjective) than…
○​ Aussi + adjectif + que
■​ As (adjective) as…


●​ When using 'que', remember that 'que' --> 'qu' ' before a vowel
○​ Eg. Une voiture est plus rapide qu'un train.
​ A car is faster than a train.


Examples
Je suis plus grand que Lois.
I am taller than Lois.


Joe est moins sympathique que Jacques.
Joe is less nice than Jacques.

Henri is as strong as Julie.


Une voiture est moins rapide qu'un train mais plus rapide qu'un vélo.
A car is less quick than a train, but quicker than a train.


Le coton est plus léger que le lin mais moins léger que la soie.
Cotton is lighter than linen but less light than silk.


Au printemps, il fait moins chaud qu'en été mais plus chaud qu'en hiver.
In Spring, it is less hot than in Summer but hotter than in Winter.


Mon frère est plus grand que moi.
My brother is older than I am.


Cette voiture est moins chère que l'autre.
This car is less expensive than the other one.


L'anglais est plus facile que l'allemand.
English is easier than German.


Ce film est plus intéressant que le livre.
That film is more interesting than the book.


Ma maison est plus petite que ta maison.
My house is smaller than your house.
