Partial Notes

,1. Henry VII

, Drama and Music in Tudor society
Drama:
 At the time this was the most popular art form.
 Plays were often presented alongside Church-ale Festivals, this
is an example of how the church influenced the popular art forms of
the time.
 Sometimes the actors were funded by members of the
nobility.
 The most popular performances were mystery plays
performed at feasts of Corpus Christi.
 The drama performances were important festive occasion’s
especially in churches, and they provided straightforward moral and
religious messages for the moral improvement of their audiences.

Music:
 There were many variations of music, such as the bandpipe and wind groups who performed on
Saints’ Day.
 Music underwent the beginning of a ‘renaissance’ through
small chants evolving into fully formed chiral pieces.
 New choral music involved independent lines sung by different
parts of the choir, usually played in cathedrals.
 The Eton Choirbook (1505) included 93 separate musical
compositions. This was closely linked to Henry VII, who
appointed Thomas Browne as Earl of Oxford and Robert
Fayrfax granted patronage (both composers of the choirbook).
 Music performed to the wealthy included instruments such as
trumpets, shawms, and sackbuts, in softer music, lutes, harps,
and recorders.
 Browne and Fayrfax produced secular songs for entertainment
and carols were growing in popularity.
