The func on of the human skeleton
The skeleton provides support by allowing us to sit up, stand and to
move our body. The vertebrae support the head to keep us upright,
the skeleton also provides protec on of our internal organs. For
example, the cranium protects the brain, the vertebrae protect the
spinal cord, and the pelvis o ers protec on to the sensi ve
reproduc ve organs.

A achment for skeletal muscle occurs when a skeletal muscle
a aches to bone at two or more places. The bones of the skeleton
provide surfaces for the a achment of muscles. The skeletal system
also carries out the storage of minerals, bones act as a mineral store
for calcium and phosphorus for later use, minerals are what
strengthen the bones. The skeletal system carries out the produc on
of blood cells, they are formed in red bone marrow as they produce
red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
Figure 1
When the minerals in the blood are too high, the bones retain more of the
minerals and preserve them as mineral salts, which is why the bones are so strong. If blood
levels of minerals are too low, the bones release some of the minerals back into the blood,
restoring homeostasis.

The func on of muscles
There are three types of muscles that form to make of the muscular system, these include
smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and skeletal muscle. Without muscles mobility would be
severely limited as muscles contract and relax under conscious and unconscious control to
keep us alive. As humans, maintaining a normal bodily
temperature is an important func on of the muscular
system. When body heat falls below ideal levels, skeletal
muscles become more ac ve in order to generate heat. One
example of this process is shivering. Muscles in the blood
vessels contract as well to keep the body warm.

Muscles provide stability, as muscle tendons extend over
joints and help to keep them stable. Such as the knee,
muscles extend over joints to keep us stable and upright. As
the heart pumps blood around the body, this circulates
blood around the body involuntarily this is another func on
of muscles. Without the aid of muscles, organs within the
body would be unprotected. Such as, muscles in the torso Figure 2
area, their func on is to protect the internal organs in the
front, back and sides of the body.

The func on of joints
Joints are where two bones connect, the skeleton is held
