Strategic Expansion of a South African Automotive SME into Kenya: Resource Acquisition,
Cross-Border Service Delivery, and Digital Business Models in the African Digital Economy

1. INTRODUCTION

AutoFix Solutions (Pty) Ltd, a South African small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) operating
within the automotive aftermarket industry, specialises in the supply of advanced diagnostic
equipment, genuine spare parts, and technical training services for workshops and dealerships.
Headquartered in Johannesburg, the company has traditionally served the Southern African
Development Community (SADC) region but has never expanded into East Africa. Due to the recent
25% to 30% tariffs imposed by the United States government on various imports, which have
significantly diminished South Africa's vehicle and automotive component exports to traditional
markets, AutoFix Solutions has decided to establish its first subsidiary in Kenya. Kenya has been
selected as the host country because it represents a new frontier for growth, offering a vibrant digital
economy and increasing demand for automotive services.

2. CHOOSING THE AFRICAN HOST COUNTRY

The decision by AutoFix Solutions to expand its operations from South Africa to Kenya is not
arbitrary but rather the result of a systematic evaluation of opportunity recognition, logistical
infrastructure challenges, and cost of expansion considerations, as guided by the foreign market entry
frameworks discussed in Peng and Meyer (2019) and Peng and Meyer (2023). Opportunity
recognition is the first critical factor. Kenya has emerged as a leading digital economy within Africa,
with Nairobi serving as a regional hub for trade, finance, and technology. According to Kobisingye
et al. (2025), digital transformation and innovation significantly enhance market expansion
capabilities for SMEs across East African countries, and Kenya, in particular, offers a conducive
environment for technology-enabled automotive services. The demand for automotive products in
Kenya is driven by a rapidly growing middle class, increasing vehicle ownership, and a thriving
used-vehicle import market. Most vehicles on Kenyan roads are second-hand imports from Japan,
Europe, and the United Arab Emirates, and these vehicles often lack proper maintenance histories
and require reliable diagnostic services and quality spare parts. AutoFix Solutions recognises this
gap as a substantial business opportunity, as local workshops frequently struggle with outdated
diagnostic tools and inconsistent parts supply. Furthermore, the establishment of the African
Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) has begun to reduce tariff barriers and streamline customs
procedures, making it more feasible for a South African SME to enter Kenya without facing
prohibitive import duties on automotive components and diagnostic equipment (Peng & Meyer,
2019). This policy shift aligns with the SME's strategic goal of diversifying export destinations away
from US-influenced markets.
