Comprehensive and well-structured study notes on placenta embryology, ideal for medical and health science students. This document covers the structure, development, and physiological functions of the placenta, including maternal-fetal circulation, trophoblast differentiation, and placental barrier mechanisms. It also explains key concepts such as hormone secretion (hCG, progesterone, estrogens, hPL), immunological protection (IgG transfer), and clinical correlations like infections, drug transfer, and placental insufficiency. Additional topics include: Fetal membranes (amnion, chorion, decidua) Amniotic fluid and its disorders (polyhydramnios & oligohydramnios) Umbilical cord structure and function Placental changes during pregnancy Twin pregnancies and membrane variations Perfect for exam preparation in embryology, histology, and reproductive biology. Clear, concise, and highly visual content for efficient studying.

, Concept and general
functions of the placenta
The placenta is the specialized organ that allows physiological
communication between the mother and the fetus. Its main function
is to ensure the exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and waste products
between both compartments, in addition to secreting essential
hormones that sustain the pregnancy. In the ninth week of gestation,
fetal demands increase considerably, and there is an increase in the
surface area of the chorionic villi. This expansion maximizes the
efficiency of maternal-fetal exchange. It also regulates
immunological processes and constitutes a partial barrier against
harmful agents, although many viruses and drugs can cross it.
