UNIT 2 ASSIGNMENT B
B: Undertake calorimetry to study cooling curves

, Introduc on:
It is impera ve that within the scien c industry that equipment is calibrated before use, this is to
minimise the risk of wrong readings/measurements and ensures that the scien c equipment used
gives o the most accurate measurement.

Aim:
The aim of this inves ga on was to calibrate two thermometers, and to check they were correctly
calibrated beforehand. By placing the thermometers in boiling water and ice-cold water to correctly
calibrate both thermometers.

Hypothesis:
When both thermometers are calibrated using the method below, both readings would be more
accurate, but I predict that the digital thermometer would provide readings that is closer to 100°C
when placed in boiling water and a closer reading to 0°C when placed in ice cold water, compared to
the alcohol thermometer.

Equipment:
- Beaker
- Alcohol thermometer
- Digital thermometer
- Water bath
- Boiling water
- Ice-cold water
- Stearic acid

Calibra on of thermometers method:
1. A beaker was lled with ice and 100ml of tap water.
2. The beaker was le to rest for 30 seconds, this allowed for the temperature to drop.
3. The alcohol thermometer was placed into the ice-cold water beaker, the temperature was
measured.
4. The steps men oned above were repeated with a digital thermometer.
5. A beaker was lled with 100ml boiling water from a ke le and both alcohol and digital
thermometers were placed into separate beakers of boiling water.
Cooling curve of stearic acid method:
1. A beaker was lled with boiling water, to act as a water bath.
