Are Tattooed Woman really rebellious or are they on a path of self-expression?
Tattoo Culture has been around since ancient times dating back as far as 4 BC (Gualdi et al,
2021). Currently, tattoos have become a popular aspect of todays society; however, they
bring with them stereotypical thoughts of violence and rebelliousness as explained in a recent
study carried out by Viren Swarmi, psychology lecturer at the University of Westminster
(Swami et al, 2015). Research undergone by Swami outlined that those who have tattoos
report to have a higher level of aggression than those without tattoos, especially woman
(Swami et al, 2015). In spite of the findings Woman reported to have higher levels of
rebelliousness than men stating that “disappointing events may result in the individual
obtaining a tattoo as a way of coping” (Swami et al, 2015).
On the Other hand, a Journal written by Cindy Farley which was published in the 2nd issue of
the Journal of midwifery and woman’s health, stated that the prevalence of people who have
tattoos has increased especially in woman (Farley et al, 2019). She believes this is due to the
need for woman living today need to express them selves in a more dramatic way therefore
resulting in tattoos (Farley et al, 2019). She also states that woman use their bodies and art to
tell stories for example, woman is now having mastectomy scars covering tattoos and young
girls who are victims of human trafficking are presenting with tattoos given by their enslavers
(Farley et al, 2019).
Therefore, to conclude both studies outline valid points; Swarmi outlines that tattoos have
been around for a long time and do come with stereotypical assumptions of violence and
rebelliousness especially in woman, however Farley outlines that woman are not so much
rebelliousness there is just a big social expectation of woman and their levels of confidence,
self-expression and self-identification; Are Tattooed Woman rebellious or are they on a path
of self-expression? Remains a strong point for further study and analysis.
