WBCs 5,000-10,000 Elevated level: Inflammation, infection
Decreased level: Immunosuppression, autoimmune disease




HGB Females: 12-16 A protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.

Males: 14-18 Elevated level: COPD, erythrocytosis,, severe dehydration
Decreased level: Anemia, kidney disease, hemorrhage



HCT Females: 37%-47% Same as above for Hgb.
Measures the percentage of red blood cells in blood.
Males: 42%-52%
Elevated level: Erythrocytosis, COPD, severe dehydration

PLTs 150,000-400,000 If the patient is receiving a Heparin infusion and their platelets drop lower than
100,000, STOP the infusion first.
- Antidote for Heparin is Protamine.

Decreased level: Enlarged spleen, leukemia, hemorrhage

Anticoagulation 1.5-2 Used to assess patients on warfarin, their levels will be one to two times higher
than normal.
Critical: >20
Increased time: Warfarin therapy, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC),
clotting factors II, V, VII, or X, liver disease
Decreased time: Vitamin K excess, thrombophlebitis, pulmonary embolus
