College 8: John Locke | David
Hume
Moderniteit
Empirisme & scepticisme (Locke & Hume):

Descartes in een notendop
 Methodische & universele twijfel
 Methode: ratio en wiskunde
 1e zekerheid: cogito
 2e zekerheid: God († malin génie)
 3e zekerheid: buiten-wereld
 Rationalisme vs. Empirisme

John Locke (1632 tot 1704)
- Wat is een fundament
Zintuigelijke waarneming en empirisme
Fundamenten:
- Een vraag naar oorsprong (origins)
- Een vraag naar zekerheid (certainty)
- Een vraag naar reikwijdte (extent)

“No innate ideas!”
 Empirisme vs. rationalisme: fundament
 Geen aangeboren ideeën (= no innate ideas) >< (Descartes en
Plato)
 Mind/soul = “a white paper, void of all characters”
o Tabula rasa  een ongeschreven blad (zoals Aristoteles)
 Simple ideas (sensations & reflections) -> complex idea
o Sensation (uitwendige waarnemingen): de alledaagse
zintuigelijke waarneming (extern)

,  Vb: simple ideas: wit, cilindrisch, hard… ’complex idea’
herinneren (zintuigen)
 Innerlijke zelfwaarneming
 Simple idees: willen, herinneren, vergelijken
 (Bv. vorm, grootte, beweging, aantal, uitgebreidheid).
o Secondair: kwalitatief (kleur, geur, smaak)
 substance = “supposed but unknown support of those qualities we
find existing”

An essay concerning human understanding, c. ii

“Some people regard it as settled that there are in the understanding
certain innate principles. These are conceived as primary notions—letters
printed on the mind of man, so to speak—which the soul receives when it
first comes into existence, and that it brings into the world with it. I could
show any fair-minded reader that this is wrong if I could show (as I hope to
do in the present work) how men can get all the knowledge they have,
and can arrive at certainty about some things, purely by using their
natural faculties, without help from any innate notions or principles.”
