Perspectives

Introduction

Poverty in contemporary South Africa remains a persistent and
pervasive challenge, despite the country’s transition from apartheid to
democracy and its relative economic growth in the post-apartheid era.
While South Africa has made strides in political inclusion, democratic
governance, and constitutional rights, the structural inequalities
entrenched by historical processes continue to produce high levels of
social and economic deprivation across the country. Poverty in South
Africa is not merely a matter of insufficient income; it encompasses
restricted access to quality education, healthcare, land, housing,
employment, and political influence. It also reflects deep social

further engages with the analysis of Arrighi, Aschoff, and Scully (2010)
regarding apartheid-induced accumulation by dispossession, illustrating
