for coordinating programs to serve medically compromised children in the service area.
The population consists of a mix of diverse SES and ethnic groups. The dental

,CASE: A dental hygienist in a community clinic is working with the medical clinic staff to
develop an interdisciplinary program to improve the oral care of pregnant women who
are treated in the community clinic. The population of the community clinic is primarily
Hispanic and of low SES. Approximately 30% of the pregnant women in this population
develop gestational diabetes. When a woman first sees the nurse practitioner in the
medical clinic for prenatal care, she is referred to the dental clinic for a dental
examination and for routine dental treatment. Only 20% of the patients referred over the
previous 6 months complied with the dental referral. As a result, the medical and dental
staff collaborated to conduct a survey of the pregnant women served by this clinic.
Results revealed that the women do not realize their risk for diabetes and are unaware
of the relationship between oral health status and diabetes. The women do not
understand the benefits of an oral health assessment in relation to their overall health
and the health of their babies. For the purpose of discussing the problem and possible
solutions, the dental hygienist arranged a meeting of the medical clinic director, the
dental clinic director, one of the nurse practitioners, a prominent leader of the Hispanic
community, and a dental clinic staff member from the community.
QUESTION: Based on the results of the survey, which of the following health education
theories would be the MOST appropriate to use as the foundation for an oral health
education intervention to improve compliance with the dental referral?—ANSWER--
Health belief model
According to current CDC recommendations, what level of fluoride in parts per million
(ppm) must be added to this community's water to bring the fluoride level to the
, optimum?—ANSWER--the most current CDC recommendation, effective in 2012, is
0.07 ppm. Since the fluoride level of the water in this scenario is 0.01 ppm, the required
additional fluoride to bring the level to optimum is 0.06 ppm
A community fluoride varnish program is funded by Kaiser Permanente. Kaiser
Permanente will also fund dental treatment for the children who are suffering from
dental pain and provide an educational program for the parents. The program is a
collaborative effort of Head Start, a community clinic, and a local dental hygiene
program. The Head Start children are screened by a dental hygienist whose position is
funded by the program. The urban community is not fluoridated, and the natural level of
fluoride in the community water supply is 0.01 ppm. The state dental practice act does
not require a dentist for the screening because the children will be referred to the
community clinic for treatment and follow-up. The screening is accomplished with a
tongue blade and available light. The children are then referred to a community dental
clinic for fluoride varnish placement by dental hygiene students on rotation from a local
dental hygiene program and for dental treatment, as needed. An education program is
conducted with parents to increase compliance with the referral. The rate of
compliance with the referral is determined to evaluate the effectiveness of the
educational program.
QUESTION: What type of data is generated by the summative program evaluation of the
educational program?—ANSWER--Dichotomous
