HED4803
Assignment 3 PORTFOLIo 2026
Unique number: 690337
Due date: 10 October 2026
Introduction
This portfolio reflects on the learning that developed across HED4803 and shows
how adult education theory, policy, history and monitoring can influence practical
work with adult learners. The module treats adult education as a field where theory
should help an educator examine practice instead of remaining separate from
everyday teaching (University of South Africa, 2026). A portfolio is useful in this
process because it brings earlier work, feedback and later reflection into one place,
making learning progress easier to see and evaluate (Di Silvestro & Nadir, 2021).
Adult learning also becomes stronger when learners connect new ideas with
experience and take responsibility for their development, which makes reflection
important for an honours level adult educator (Merriam & Baumgartner, 2020).
The portfolio therefore looks back at the first three assignments before applying Unit

The portfolio therefore looks back at the first three assignments before applying Unit
4 to monitoring and evaluation in ACET practice. My main learning is that adult
education cannot be separated from learners’ experience, social conditions and the
purposes that bring them into a programme (Knowles et al., 2025). South African
adult education also carries a history of exclusion and later policy efforts to widen
access, which means evaluation should ask whether programmes actually reach and
benefit the adults they were created to serve (Vally & Motala, 2022). For this reason,
the discussion focuses on personal learning as well as the wider question of whether
ACET practice remains relevant, participatory and useful to communities (University
of South Africa, 2026).

1.1 E-Portfolio and the Purpose of an E-Journal
An e-portfolio is a structured digital collection of work that shows what a learner has
done, how the work has developed and what has been learned from the process. In
adult education, the value lies in more than storing finished assignments because
reflection helps the learner notice changes in understanding, confidence and
professional identity (Di Silvestro & Nadir, 2021). I would establish an e-journal
alongside the portfolio because it gives me a private working space to record
difficulties, feedback, questions and corrections while the learning is still taking
place. This approach fits adult learning because adults bring previous knowledge
