Key Physiological Changes After Birth
Diaphoresis and Temperature Regulation
Diaphoresis refers to profuse sweating that occurs after childbirth, particularly at
night, as a mechanism to eliminate excess fluid retained during pregnancy.
This physiological response helps the body to restore its fluid balance post-
delivery, which is crucial for recovery.
Maternal temperature can be elevated immediately after birth, often remaining
high for the first hour before gradually decreasing over the next 48 hours,
indicating the body's adjustment to the postpartum state.
Uterine Changes: Involution and Autolysis
Involution is the process by which the uterus returns to its nonpregnant size and
state after childbirth, typically taking about 6 weeks.
Autolysis is the self-destruction of excess uterine tissue due to decreased levels of
estrogen and progesterone, which occurs after the placenta is expelled.
Subinvolution is a complication where the uterus fails to return to its normal size,
often due to retained placental fragments or infection.
