QUESTION 1: MORAL RESPONSIBILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN
LEADERSHIP

Introduction

Moral responsibility in leadership means that leaders must consider whether their
choices are right, fair and respectful towards the people affected by them. Ethical
leaders understand that their authority includes a duty to protect employees,
customers, communities and other stakeholders from avoidable harm (Din et al.,
2023). Accountability means that leaders must explain their decisions, accept the
results of their conduct and face suitable consequences when they misuse their
position. These two concepts work together because responsibility guides a leader
before making a decision, while accountability requires an honest response after that
decision has produced results (Reddick et al., 2025).

leaders understand that their authority includes a duty to protect employees,
customers, communities and other stakeholders from avoidable harm (Din et al.,

results of their conduct and face suitable consequences when they misuse their
position. These two concepts work together because responsibility guides a leader
before making a decision, while accountability requires an honest response after that
decision has produced results (Reddick et al., 2025).

Ethical behaviour and answerability

Ethical behaviour is important because employees often copy the conduct shown by
senior managers, especially when those managers control rewards, promotions and
workplace rules (Mozumder, 2022). A leader who treats people fairly, keeps
promises and follows organisational policies creates a clear example of acceptable
behaviour. Answerability also prevents leaders from using their senior position to
avoid difficult questions when something goes wrong. For example, a manager who
approved an unsafe working process should explain what information was
considered and accept responsibility instead of blaming junior employees. Ethical
leadership therefore strengthens trust because people can see that the same
standards apply to both leaders and workers (Reddick et al., 2025).

Transparency

Transparency means that leaders communicate important information clearly and do
not deliberately hide facts that stakeholders need when making decisions. Open
communication allows employees and other stakeholders to understand how
decisions were reached, how money was used and why certain actions were taken
(Zhu et al., 2025). A transparent leader should disclose possible conflicts of interest,
provide truthful reports and explain changes that affect employees. For example,
