1.1) I will now be discussing what whole class discussion is. I will also include
memories where I have experienced whole class discussion successful and
unsuccessful. When defining whole class discussion there are two
perceptions of this definition. As the cartoons expressed, one teacher was
involved and the other not. In my opinion whole class discussion refers to a
discussion where everyone in the class will be participating in. the discussion
normally forms part of a larger conversation around lessons that h ave been
concluded previously.
It also means that the teacher should participate and debate, direct answers
and ensure discipline while conducting a whole class discussion. A whole
class discussion will learn learners to respect others while speaking as well as
their opinions, it also teaches self-control in terms of waiting to give your
answer rather than blurting out answers.
A success story I can share with regards to whole class discussion would be
when I was in grade 11 and we had to read a chapter of a book on our own
and the following day we had to share our thoughts and findings within a
whole class discussion. I found this very successful as the teacher was very
engaging and gave everyone a chance to share their findings and I was able
to hear what my classmates had to say which gave me a much better
understanding of the book as I hear their opinions and findings.
Another scenario of whole class discussion would be in my biology class. We
where asked to complete an activity within a group of 4 and when done we
had to share what we did and what we learnt with the class. This was an
unsuccessful whole class discussion for me as I was not very comfortable
with the subject and sharing my findings with the class. Reason being, the
class was loud and unmannerly and there was no discipline expressed from
the teacher.
1.2) Discussion is important within the classroom because it allows learners to
engage in discussion which increases social skills and confidence. It helps
learners to increase their communication skills. Promoting an engaging
classroom will lead to your learners being more prepared as the option remains
that they might have to speak up. Discussion also helps the teacher to establish
weather the lesson they gave have been perceived by the learners through
interactive discussion. Another benefit of discussion would be that learners are
allowed to voice their opinions which has great benefit within learners. It
teaches them that all opinions are equally important and that everyone should
have their voice listened to.
