SECTION 1: COMPREHENSION (DETAILED)
1. What Comprehension REALLY Tests
In Grade 12 HL, comprehension tests:
• Reading accuracy
• Critical thinking
• Interpretation
• Evaluation
• Language analysis
• Argument understanding
• Writer’s intention
It is not just about “finding answers”. It is about understanding how meaning is
constructed.
2. Levels of Questioning (Very Important for Exams)
Level 1: Literal (Lower-order)
• Information directly stated
• Usually 1 mark
Example:
“What caused the protest?”
Answer is directly in the text.
, Level 2: Reorganisation
• Combine information from different places
• Compare ideas
Level 3: Inference
You must:
• Read between the lines
• Use clues
• Explain implied meaning
Example:
“What does the phrase ‘silent streets’ suggest?”
Possible inference:
It suggests fear, tension, or abandonment.
Level 4: Evaluation
You must:
• Judge effectiveness
• Critique argument
• Discuss bias
Example:
“Do you agree with the writer’s viewpoint? Give reasons.”

3. Analysing Tone, Mood and Attitude
Tone = Writer’s emotional voice
Examples:
• Sarcastic
• Critical
• Nostalgic
• Humorous
• Formal
