LEARNING UNIT 1: INTRODUCING COMMUNICATION QUESTION 1 Lucy was
running late for an important meeting and needed to inform her colleague,
Thabo, right away. She quickly dialled his number and spoke into her phone,
hoping he would understand her situation. Although her voice was clear at
the start, as a result of noisy construction equipment outside her office, her
words sounded slightly muffled. Thabo strained to listen, piecing together
what Lucy was saying about the new meeting time. After catching most of
her hurried explanation, he responded with a quick, “Got it — thanks for the
heads up!” Hearing this reply, Lucy breathed a sigh of relief, knowing her
message had gotten through despite the interference. Discuss the African
perspective of communication using the definition of communication as the
sharing of meaning from one entity to another. Include examples of types of
communication that illustrate the African perspective of communication. The
Shannon Weaver model of communication is based on the idea that
communication is a process of transmitting information from a sender to a
receiver through a channel. Identify and explain the seven elements of the
Shannon Weaver model as depicted in the scenario provided. Basing your

,answer on the definition of communication from the African perspective,
identify and explain any two types of communication relating to this
perspective. Identify the main issue discussed in the news story and explain
how the media gave it importance through priming. Describe how the story
is framed. Whose perspectives are prioritised, and which voices are missing.
Suggest a different way in which the story could be framed to include a more
balanced or inclusive perspective, particularly that of marginalised groups.
Explain why this approach is important. Identify at least two occurrences of
listening and at least two occurrences of hearing as illustrated in the
scenario. Provide a detailed discussion in which you clearly differentiate
between the processes of listening and hearing. Discuss the nature and
characteristics of the listening and hearing processes. Cite two practical
examples from your own lived experiences to support your discussion. The
Shannon Weaver model of communication is based on the idea that
communication is a process of transmitting information from a sender to a
receiver through a channel. This model consists of seven basic elements.
Identify any four elements as illustrated in the scenario and briefly explain
each. Cite practical examples from the scenario to support your answer.
Define the type of communication that is taking place in the scenario where
a person experiences negative thoughts before a meeting, and provide two
practical examples from the scenario to illustrate your answer. Discuss how
our perceptions are influenced by culture. In your discussion, include both
Western and African cultural views. Provide practical examples to support
your discussion. Define agenda setting theory. Then explain the two distinct
levels of agenda setting theory. In two sentences, explain what is meant by
de centring and re centring. Explain your understanding of Indigenous
Knowledge Systems. Provide examples of Indigenous Knowledge Systems
from your childhood experiences. Explain what intergenerational trauma
barriers refer to. Identify the main issue discussed in the news story and
explain how the media gave it importance through priming. Basing your

, INTRODUCTION
Communication is a fundamental human activity that involves the sharing of meaning between
individuals and communities. From an African perspective, communication extends beyond the
mere transmission of information and emphasises relationality, community, shared
understanding and interconnectedness. This assignment discusses key communication theories
and concepts, including the African perspective of communication, the Shannon-Weaver model,
listening and hearing, agenda-setting theory, framing, Indigenous Knowledge Systems,
perception, and intrapersonal communication. Practical examples are used throughout to
illustrate theoretical concepts.

1. African Perspective of Communication
From an African perspective, communication is understood as the sharing of meaning from
one entity to another within a communal and relational context. It is rooted in Ubuntu — the
idea that “I am because we are.” Communication is therefore not only about exchanging
information but about maintaining relationships, harmony, identity and collective wellbeing.

Unlike the Western model, which often emphasises individual expression and transmission of
messages, the African approach emphasises:

 Community and interconnectedness
 Shared meaning-making
 Respect for elders and tradition
 Oral traditions and storytelling
 Non-verbal and symbolic communication

Examples of Types of Communication in the African Perspective

1. Interpersonal Communication within Community Gatherings
For example, village meetings where elders and community members discuss important
matters collectively. Meaning is negotiated together.
2. Oral Tradition and Storytelling
In many African households, grandparents tell stories that pass down values, morals and
history. Communication is educational, relational and cultural.
