Question 1

Discuss the goals and importance of African psychology in society.

African psychology emerged as a response to the historical domination of
Western psychological theories and practices in Africa. As highlighted in the
development of psychology on the continent, mainstream psychology was largely
imported through colonial institutions and often failed to recognise African
knowledge systems, cultural practices, and lived realities (Ratele, 2017). African
psychology therefore seeks to correct historical distortions, centre African
worldviews, and develop contextually relevant psychological knowledge. Its goals
and importance in society can be understood in relation to decolonisation,
cultural affirmation, communal well-being, and social transformation.

1. Decolonising Psychological Knowledge

One of the primary goals of African psychology is the decolonisation of the
discipline. During colonialism and apartheid, psychology was used to justify racial
hierarchies through intelligence testing, psychiatric classification, and biased
research methods (Bulhan, 2015). Western theories were presented as universal,
while African ways of knowing were marginalised or dismissed as unscientific.

African psychology challenges this dominance by questioning the assumption that
Western models are universally applicable. It advocates for knowledge production
that reflects African histories, languages, and cultural realities (Nsamenang,
2007). In this way, African psychology is not merely an alternative perspective but
a corrective project aimed at dismantling epistemic injustice and restoring
intellectual dignity to African societies.

The importance of this goal lies in promoting fairness and relevance in
psychological practice. When psychological theories are culturally inappropriate,
they may misdiagnose, misunderstand, or pathologise normal cultural behaviours.
