Assignment 3 2026
Unique number:
Due date: August 2026
QUESTION 3.1: STEPS IN THE PROJECT PLANNING PROCESS
Project planning begins after the project has been approved and the contract has
been signed. Since every project is different, planning helps the project manager
answer the main questions about what must be delivered, how the work will be done,
who will do it, when it will happen, what it will cost and how progress will be
controlled (Nicholas & Steyn, 2021:165).
1. What is the desired end result?
The first step is to define the project objectives, scope, system requirements and
expected deliverables. The purpose is to make sure that the customer and project
team clearly understand what must be achieved, including the expected time, cost
and performance targets (Nicholas & Steyn, 2021:165).

and performance targets (Nicholas & Steyn, 2021:165).
2. How will the result be achieved?
The next step is to identify all the activities and tasks needed to achieve the project
objectives. These activities must include the technical work as well as planning,
control and administration work (Nicholas & Steyn, 2021:166). The purpose is to
break the project into clear work that can be managed properly.
3. Who will do the work?
The project manager must identify the people, departments, managers and
subcontractors who will perform the work. Their responsibilities must also be clearly
stated so that everyone knows what they are accountable for (Nicholas & Steyn,
2021:166).
4. When and in what order?
A schedule must be prepared to show when activities should start and finish,
including deadlines and milestone dates (Nicholas & Steyn, 2021:166). The purpose
is to organise the work in the correct order and reduce the risk of delays.
5. How much?
A budget and resource plan must be prepared to show the money, people,
equipment and other resources needed for the project (Nicholas & Steyn, 2021:166).
