murder, aggravated robbery, and gender-based violence using
emotionally charged language, graphic imagery, and dramatic headlines.
While journalists argue that such reporting reflects reality and fulfils the
public’s right to information, concerns have been raised about the
potential impact of intensive crime coverage on public perceptions of
safety and trust in the criminal justice system.
Research suggests that public fear of crime is not shaped solely by direct
victimisation, but may also be influenced by indirect exposure through
media consumption. The framing, repetition, and prominence of violent
crime stories may contribute to heightened anxiety, behavioural changes,
and mistrust of government institutions. At the same time, discrepancies
between official crime statistics and public perceptions raise important
questions about the role of media in shaping social reality.
This assignment proposes a research study designed to explore the
relationship between media coverage of violent crime and public
perceptions of crime and safety in South Africa. The study applies key
research methodology principles, including the formulation of a research
aim and objectives, selection of an appropriate research approach,
identification of sampling strategies, development of a data collection
instrument, and consideration of ethical principles. Through this
structured research design, the study aims to contribute to a deeper
