Borderline personality disorder (BPD)
BPD is characterized by a patterns of impulsivity and instability in relationships, moods,
and self-image
BPD - Clinical criteria
Fear of abandonment; unstable relationships (idealization/devaluation; 'splitting')
Unstable sense of self
Impulsivity; suicidal behavior and/or non-suicidal self-injury
Unstable mood (affective lability); emptiness; uncontrolled anger; stress-related paranoia
or dissociation

Etiology of BPD
People diagnosed with BPD are more likely to report neglect, sexual, mental and physical
abuse and witnessing abuse
o Abuse not necessary for diagnosis
BPD is likely best captured by a diathesis-stress model:
o Biological diathesis:
Inherited risk (overlapping with mood disorders?)
Predisposition toward poor emotion regulation
