Course Description



This course introduces the student to calculating medication dosages for the professional nurse.
Emphasis is placed on basic principles of pharmacology and safe administration of medication to
clients throughout the lifespan. Nursing responsibilities related to drug administration are

,emphasized. Indications, modes of action, effects, contraindications, and interactions for selected
drugs are explored. **Prerequisite: ENG101, MAT105, PSY112, AP118, PHI260, AP202,
MCB120, HGB120
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLOs)



The following course SLOs apply when caring for the older adult patient and family experiencing both
chronic and acute long-term health alterations. The course SLOs will be achieved by the end of the
semester.


1. Describe principles of safe medication administration in relationship to
- Achieving a minimum score of 75% on a test of basic dosage calculations. - pharmacology,
pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics and the nurse’s role in preventing medication errors
and accurately calculating dosages
2. Describe terms, concepts and pharmacodynamic processes associated with physiologic
effects of medication therapy.
3. Describe characteristics of major groups and selected individual medications in terms of the
following: mechanism(s) of action; drug effects; therapeutic uses; side effects and adverse
effects; toxicity and management of overdoses; interactions; and nursing responsibilities
related to administration, monitoring, and teaching.
4. Demonstrate the ability to convert between metric, apothecary, and household systems while
correctly calculating drug dosages.
5. Describe quality, safety and legal/ regulatory issues related to medication administration 6.
Discuss the role and legal/ethical issues related to medication administration to include the
professional team (nurse, pharmacist, nutritionist, physicians)
7. Recognize the application of technology as an essential component in the deliver of safe
drug administration, promote patient teaching/learning and document therapeutic or non-
therapeutic effects
