What is the formula for calculating the magnetization in the z-direction (the 'T1 formula')? In
addition, explain the formula
Mz(t)=M0(1−e−t/T1)
 Mz(t) = the longitudinal magnetization component aligned with the main magnetic
field (B0) at a given time (t).
 M0 = the equilibrium magnetization, representing the maximum longitudinal
magnetization when the MRI system is fully relaxed.
 e = Euler’s number (base of natural logarithm), which accounts for the exponential
nature of recovery.
 TR = repetition time, the interval between successive RF excitation pulses in an MR
sequence
o Short T1  tissues recover faster and appear brighter in T1-weighted images
o Long T1  tissues recover more slowly and appear darker on T1-weighted
images
o T1 = the relaxation time constant describing how quickly longitudinal
magnetization returns to equilibrium
In MRI, spinning hydrogen nuclei generate their own magnetic fields, resulting in a net
magnetization aligned with B0. When an RF pulse is applied, this alignment is disturbed. The
T1 relaxation formula describes how rapidly the longitudinal magnetization recovers toward
M0 following this excitation.
Given a (fictive) tissue with a T1 of 300ms and a T1 of 500ms, draw the T1 recovery curves
of both.
