Task 2

A – Summary of Scenario

A 13-year-old girl named Maria is biracial because her father is African American, and her
mother is Hispanic. The family had to move because of the father’s business. This meant Maria had to
leave her current school and friends and move into a completely different school in the middle of the
year. Maria had to go through many changes in a short amount of time, she moved from a city to a small
rural town of mainly white middle class people. The move caused fights between her parents, making
home not a very comfortable place to be. The students at her school dressed completely different than
she did, making her stand out like a sore thumb. And her peers didn’t let her forget how different she
was from them. There was also cyber bullying going on where her peers created a social media page
with the sole purpose of making fun of her. Maria brought up the bullying to her parents hoping for a
solution, but her parents didn’t see it as an issue compared their own. She can’t focus on her classes
because her mind is running full of thoughts. Seeing no way out she began thinking of a permanent
solution of ending her life.

B1 – Action

As a teacher my first action would be to address Maria’s suicidal thoughts. I would get together
with the school counselor and make a plan to help Maria get what she needs. I would then let Maria
know that there will always be a safe place for her in my classroom, and that she is always welcome to
talk to me about anything she needs. I would then build a good relationship with her so that she knows
that she will always have a place to come to for support. To build a relationship I would share my own
experiences with her that she can relate to. To show her that it is alright to not be perfect, and that no
one is. I would then let her parents know what was going on so that they can be in the loop. And I would
help them see that Maria really does need help, it’s not her just trying to get attention.

B1 – Justification

Addressing Maria’s thoughts of ending her life and using the school counselor will help her in
many ways. It would help her learn different ways to cope with the things going on throughout her life,
and how she can add herself into her new community by volunteering or getÝng to know new people.
The school counselor would help her with her self-esteem and teach her how to use different coping
mechanisms for each situation she is faced with.

B2 – Family Involvement
It is extremely important for Maria’s parents to be involved, because thoughts of ending one’s
life is a serious thing, and should not be pushed aside. I would have the school counselor contact her
parents and fill them in on what is going on and tell them that they mustn’t get angry at her for this. It is
important that the parents’ involvement is a good thing for Maria, not something that will make her
situation worse. The school counselor could provide contact information to a formal therapist outside of
