Task 1: Organizational Structure
A. Describe an organizational structure you would select for the consulting business in the scenario by
doing the following:
1. Chosen Organizational Structure
(A1)
In my organization, I would select the Matrix structure. I believe this structure serves the
organization the best to find ways to help the community and the businesses in the community to
grow and prosper. I believe using a team leader or project manager to lead the team comprised of
various skilled members can work together with incredible efÏciency. Using the matrix structure,
they will all be a part of a particular department of the organization but would work as a team to
achieve the goals set before them. The Team Leader can track their progress and assist them as
needed. As our company grows, we will likely assign multiple teams to each leader. I like the matrix
structure because it allows people from different departments to communicate to get the job done,
but the employee will still report to their own manager as well.
2. Chosen Organizational Structure and the Four Factors
(A2)
• Functions/Departments- Each team would consist of a member of each department. Each member
would be bringing their own specific set of skills to offer the whole team. As a whole, the team
would work together to fulfill the tasks at hand.
• Chain Of Command- The company would start with me as the CEO. Each team would have a leader
would would report to the CEO. As the company grows, we will add another link to the chain of
command by creating a manager each team leader will report to, and that manager will, in turn,
report to the CEO.
• Centralized/Decentralized- I would select the Centralized for our company at this time. In the
beginning, there should be a key person that takes charge to make the crucial decisions. As the
company grows we will re-evaluate the company’s needs to se if a more decentralized structure
would better serve us.
• Level Of Formality- As a new company, and being small, it is likely to fall within the informal
structure, due to the level of interaction the CEO would have with the teams involved, but as the
company grows in size it would be more beneficial to go to a more formal structure.
B. Organizational Structure Aligned with Organizational Theory
• Contingency/Situational- For my company, I chose to apply the Contingency/Situational
organizational theory. To use Contingency/Situational Theory, the manager must have the ability to
work independently of upper management. They must have the disciple to make a decision, and
