Scholarly Examples of Disruptive Innovations that Improved Healthcare
Many disruptive innovations have transformed healthcare. One specific innovation is
telemedicine. Telemedicine is used in a variety of ways that both improve patient care and reduce
provider burden (Stoltzfus et al., 2023). Telemedicine allows remote diagnosis and treatment of patie
through virtual visits. This has specifically allowed patients in underserved areas increased access to
care. There is a decrease in emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and complications when patient
can see primary care providers regularly. The impact on healthcare outcomes includes continuity of
care, improved medication adherence, and improved access to care.
Another disruptive innovation includes continuous glucose monitors (CGM). These devices
allow diabetic patients to track their blood sugars in real-time (Miller, 2020). This allows for
immediate adjustments in diet and insulin. Better glycemic control is associated with increased
medication compliance, reduced complications, and better quality of life. As healthcare professionals,
we see complications from diabetes daily. Improved glycemic control improves the health outcomes
patients. Decreased patient complications contribute to better health outcomes through reduced
hospitalizations and emergency room visits (Miller, 2020).
