Scholarly Examples of Disruptive Innovations that Improved Healthcare

One example of disruptive innovation that has improved healthcare is the

implementation of the electronic medication administration records (eMAR). Errors in

medication administration is one of the leading causes of preventable patient harm

within healthcare systems. Advanced technology use such as the eMAR results in

substantial reduction in errors. Each medication has a barcode built into the package.

The use of the barcode requires scanning of the patient’s ID and the medication to

assure accuracy. This technology has become a highly recommended innovation in

hospital systems across the world to ensure patient safety during medication

administration. (Ratanto, 2021)

Furthermore, the second innovation that has improved healthcare is the use of

communication platforms, such as Zoom, for telehealth visits. During the recent

COVID19 pandemic, there was an increase in the use of internet telehealth technology

by medical professionals for patient care. The use of the telehealth technology allowed

providers to speak to patients without exposure to the virus as well as a way for patients

to speak with family members. With the use of the virtual platforms the medical

community was able to conclude that the use of telehealth technology would help

manage patient care in many fields as well as increase patient provider relationships.

This also allows the patient to receive healthcare education as well as virtual medical

care in the comfort of their own home (Siwicki, 2021)
