Service Line for Comprehensive Weight Management
Proposed Nursing Service Idea
The proposed nursing service line is a comprehensive weight management clinic. Iberia
Parish, Louisiana, has an obesity rate of 43%, which is higher than the state average of 39%, as
well as the national average of 34% (Iberia, Louisiana, n.d.). The purpose of this nurse-led
service is to improve health outcomes and decrease BMI, targeting adult patients over the age
of 18 with obesity in Iberia Parish. The service line will provide diet education and in-person
instruction on exercise. It will also provide medication management as needed. The service line
will also include referrals to sources for obtaining healthy foods. This service line will be a free-
standing community clinic that is not associated with any other organization or hospital.
The nursing service line will be nurse-led by a Nurse Practitioner. Opening this service
line will require multiple leadership skills and approaches. First, the leadership approach must
be very strategic. The leader must develop a clear and specific goal for the clinic and be able to
implement various processes and decisions to reach the goal. Next, the leader must be
collaborative in their approach. Because the clinic will require a multidisciplinary approach with
key staff outside of nursing, the leader must collaborate to ensure the patient receives
comprehensive and patient-centered treatment. The leader must also have strong change
management skills. Opening a new clinic is often a fluid process that requires continual
adjustments based on data and evidence-based practice to ensure success. The leader must
successfully guide the team through the change process to ensure positive outcomes and clinic
success. The leader must also have vast financial and operational acumen. This is necessary to
ensure operational compliance with regulations, secure funding, meet budgetary requirements,
reduce costs through efficiency, and decrease errors.
As previously discussed, the team in the clinic will be multidisciplinary. First, a nurse
practitioner will prescribe medications as needed and obtain lab results to track things such as
organ function and cholesterol levels. There will also be a dietician on staff to educate patients
regarding eating habits and provide diet plans. According to The U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services (2018), adults need “150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic
activity” as well as “strength training activities 2 days per week”. To ensure this is managed
appropriately, there will be a physical therapist on staff who will measure and track the patients'
BMI and provide education and in-person instruction on exercise methodologies and strength
training. Finally, there will be a social worker associated with the clinic to assist patients in using
government-provided resources to acquire healthy foods.
Importance
The Comprehensive Weight Management Clinic will serve adult patients in Iberia Parish,
Louisiana. It is an important and relevant service line in this area due to the elevated rate of
obesity, 43%, which is higher than the state average of 39%, as well as the national average of
34% (Iberia, Louisiana, n.d.). The importance of this service line also relates to the diseases
associated with obesity. According to the CDC (2024), obesity puts adults at higher risk for
several other diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer, which can all be
