QUESTION 1: UNDERSTANDING OF THE SOCIAL PROBLEM

Explain the main social problem presented in the video. Your answer must show
that the case is not only about one missing child, but also about child safety,
family functioning, supervision, caregiving responsibility, community vigilance,
child protection services, and broader social conditions.

Explanation of the Main Social Problem

The disappearance of two-year-old Omphile also referred to as Mpila Sithole in the
video represents a complex child protection matter that extends far beyond a single
missing child incident. This case illuminates multiple interconnected social problems
that require comprehensive social work analysis and intervention.

Child Safety and Protection

At its core, this case fundamentally concerns the safety, care, and protection of a
vulnerable young child. The disappearance of a two-year-old child represents one of the
most serious forms of child vulnerability, where a child who is entirely dependent on
caregivers for survival and protection has become exposed to unknown dangers. The
mother's description of her daughter as "bubbly," "open," and "always happy" who
"doesn't have to tell you" when she doesn't like something (Eyewitness News, 2026)
highlights the preciousness of this young life now shrouded in uncertainty. The
grandmother's discovery that her granddaughter had been taken while sleeping next to
her represents a profound violation of the child's safety and the family's sense of
security. According to the Children's Act 38 of 2005, every child has the right to be
protected from maltreatment, neglect, abuse or degradation (South Africa, 2005:
Chapter 2, Section 28). This case represents a fundamental violation of these rights.
