MNG3701 Assignment
Vodacom’s Strategic Direction and Responsible Management
Introduction
Strategic management plays a critical role in guiding organisations towards
long-term sustainability and competitiveness. A clear vision statement, well-
defined strategic levels, measurable goals, and responsible corporate
conduct are essential components of successful management. This essay
evaluates Vodacom’s vision statement, distinguishes between the four
levels of strategy within business organisations with reference to Vodacom,
assesses one of Vodacom’s short- to medium-term targets using the
SMART principle, and critically discusses whether Vodacom can be
regarded as a responsible organisation. The discussion is based on
information contained in Vodacom’s 2024 Integrated Report and applies
relevant strategic management principles.
Evaluation of Vodacom’s Vision Statement
Vodacom’s vision is “To be the leading technology-communications
company in Africa.” A good vision statement should be clear, future-
oriented, inspiring, realistic, and provide strategic direction.
Vodacom’s vision is clear and concise. It communicates the organisation’s
aspiration in simple and understandable terms. The phrase “to be the
leading” indicates a strong future orientation, as it expresses what the
company seeks to achieve in the long term. Furthermore, the vision
specifies a geographical focus — Africa — which provides clear direction
and scope.
However, while the statement expresses ambition, it lacks uniqueness and
emotional appeal. Many telecommunications companies could adopt a
similar statement. A powerful vision statement should inspire employees
and stakeholders by reflecting distinctive values or societal impact.
