, QUESTION 1
1. Kinetoplast
The kinetoplast is a specialised region of mitochondrial DNA located near the base
of the flagellum. It contains circular DNA (kDNA) that is essential for mitochondrial
function. In African hosts, Trypanosoma depends on mitochondrial activity for energy
metabolism and adaptation to different environments (human bloodstream versus
tsetse fly). The kinetoplast ensures proper mitochondrial gene expression necessary
for survival.
2. Nucleus
The nucleus contains the parasite’s genetic material. It controls replication, protein
synthesis, and antigenic variation. Antigenic variation allows Trypanosoma to
regularly change its surface glycoproteins, helping it evade the host’s immune
system and persist in the bloodstream.
