Indigenous knowledge refers to the body of understandings, skills, values and belief
systems that are developed by specific communities over long periods through
continuous interaction with their social and natural environments. It is knowledge that
is rooted in local culture and transmitted from one generation to another through
lived experience, oral traditions, observation, and practice. Indigenous knowledge is
therefore context-specific and reflects the historical, cultural, spiritual and
environmental realities of a particular group of people.

Unlike formal Western knowledge systems that are often written and institutionalised,
indigenous knowledge is embedded in daily life. It includes systems of classification,
agricultural practices, health remedies, language, rituals, and social norms. It guides
decision-making about community life, resource management and problem-solving in
ways that are sustainable and culturally meaningful.

In the field of education, indigenous knowledge is important because learning does
not take place in isolation from culture. Learners construct meaning based on prior
knowledge and lived experiences (Zhou & Brown, 2015). Recognising indigenous
knowledge in the curriculum affirms learners’ identities and promotes inclusive
education. It also supports culturally responsive teaching practices that respect
diversity and local ways of knowing (Zhou & Brown, 2015).
