●​ There are three verb groups in French
○​ Group One: Regular 'ER' verbs
○​ Group Two: Regular 'IR' verbs
○​ Group Three: Irregular verbs and 'RE' verbs

Orthographic Changes


Changes in Parts 1, 2, 3, and 6 (I, You, He, They)

, ●​ Verbs ending in -eler
○​ Double the 'l'
○​ Eg. APPELER
■​ j'appelle, tu appelles, il appelle, nous appelons, vous
appelez, ils appellent
●​ Verbs ending in -eter
○​ Double the 't'
○​ Does NOT apply to verbs ending -éter
○​ Exceptions include acheter
○​ Eg. JETER
■​ je jette, tu jettes, il jette, nous jetons, vous jetez, ils jettent
●​ Verbs ending in the format: e + consonant + er (eg. Lever, peser,
acheter)
○​ 'e' turns to 'è'
○​ Eg. ESPÈRER
■​ j'espère, tu espères, il espère, nous espérons, vous
espérez, ils espèrent
●​ Verbs ending in -ayer or -oyer
○​ 'y' turns to an 'i'
○​ In -ayer verbs, it may also remain a 'y' (both options available)
○​ Eg. PAYER
■​ je paie, tu paies, il paie, nous payons, vous payez, ils
paient

●​ Verbs ending in -ger
○​ Add an 'e' before the 'nous' ending
○​ Eg. MANGER
■​ nous mangeons
