I will be creating a professional development on the implementation of formative
assessment and feedback in the classroom for my applied research capstone project. The
professional development will be completed in two sessions. Each session will be three hours
long.
Research topic
To differentiate instruction for upper elementary students through the implementation of
formative assessment strategies. This topic is related to curriculum and instruction because it is
our job as educators to meet the needs of our students and provide them with the tools needed to
meet their academic goals. In order to identify the current needs of the students they will need to
be formatively assessed. “ Formative assessment in the education field is a type of informal
assessment that teachers use to quickly and effectively collect student data and use the results to
not only track their students’ progress, but also to inform and drive their instruction” (Durgin,
2023, p.2). The information that I will evaluate and analyze from the formative assessment
research will guide me to develop a professional development opportunity that will provide a
variety of assessment strategies.
The topic of formative assessment is important to the field of curriculum and
instruction because it is a crucial component of a student’s education. If the misconceptions that
the students are having are not found and corrected a gap will be created and the productive
struggle we hope for, will just become a struggle. At the upper grade level there is a higher
emphasis put on testing data, small group instruction and the progress of the kids on specific
