U16A1 P2 Assignment
(P2)- Describe how the skills that employees require to carry out jobs in an
organisation are identified.
Employees require certain skills and abilities that allow them to take part in tasks and jobs
according to their job role. If employees made full use of their skills, then that means that
they are able to make the business more efficient and even better. In this assignment,
employee skills will be described and identified at Monoux to see how they can carry out
specific tasks and jobs.

Employee Skills
One way of identifying employees’ skills is through skill sets. These are a group of skills and
abilities which are required for an employee in order to complete the various jobs they are
given as per their job role. Different jobs have different levels of skill, as jobs can be more
complicated than others. Some jobs require minimum education and training, therefore it
can be considered as low-skilled, compared to other jobs that require extra education and
training, for which the job can be considered to be high-skilled. In terms of Monoux and the
various professions that they offer, there are a mix of low-skilled professions and high-
skilled professions that require different levels of education and training, which portray the
labour-intensive business that Morrisons is. For instance, an example of a high-skilled
profession at Morrisons would be a sales assistant. Being a sales assistant requires a lot of
training and a substantial amount of education qualifications, especially considering when
the skills required to become a shelf stocker are slightly harder to obtain such as
organisational skills and technological skills, by working the till, which uses technology
rather than mechanical parts. An example of a high-skilled profession at Monoux would be a
teacher. Becoming a teacher requires years of education, qualifications, and experience, for
which many different skills are needed, such as communication skills, competent abilities in
office applications like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint or Excel and knowledge within a specific
course or subject. For example, teachers at Monoux who work in the Digital Pathway must
be able to understand and teach courses relating to computing and ICT to the relevant
students as the Digital Pathway solely consists of courses and subjects relating to computers
and the digital world.

Skill Acquisition
Another way of identifying employees’ skills is through skill acquisitions. Employees getting
new skills can make them more motivated, therefore they can become more efficient in the
workplace. However, the training for these new skills requires a lot of time and effort,
though if skills are regularly required and acquired by an organisation, then that means that
it is likely that the organisation will face shortages in the amount of people that are available
to complete certain tasks, whether or not it is internal or external to the business. In
relation to Monoux, they use skill acquisition for staff in order to prepare them for the roles
of a job. For example, if a member of staff, like a teacher at Monoux became the new Head
of Department, then they must acquire skills that are relevant for that job such as
