Module: Making Sense of Society (Sociology)

Seminar 5 – Identity Politics: Pride (Sexuality)

The 20 Statements Test
It’s a psychological test that was developed in the 1950’s on identity.

Have a look through the list and count up how many you have on each of them.

There is a link on the Moodle site for you to feed your results into under Session 5 in
the Seminar Presentation. I would like you to find out which category your
statements mostly falls into.

Sociologists and psychologists have been using this tool. It was found that society
was collective as people find themselves in how they relate to others.

It’s mostly unusual to have D or A traits.

People are more on C mode than B mode when they are at the stage where they are
trying to define their life.

Why do you think we decided to ask you to do this test? Because this week is about
identity politics.

We learn how identity is shaped by so many aspects of our lives.

This week, we are looking at sexuality. We are looking at how it can shape us.

Is sexuality pre-determined or shaped through your social interactions?

Our identity is built by so many ideas and sexuality can play a crucial part of it.

Given that this test was developed in the mid-19 th century, do you think sexuality was
something that played a role in it?
 Sexuality was not considered a crucial part in this study in the 1960s.
 It was a hegemony model – people conformed to this model.
 The way that identity politics has been changed has been huge.
