How did medical advancements promote imperialism?


Medicine like quinine was a viable solution for disease like malaria that
Europeans had not yet been exposed to. This led to more expeditions in
the jungles of Africa and therefore more discoveries of raw materials
there.

What were some technological advancements that helped imperialists?


-iron-hulled ships were able to navigate African rivers
-telegraph networks allowed nations to control overseas colonies
-rapid weaponry (machine guns) allowed European to take over African
land with ease and reduce resistance against native people


How did opposition to slavery and Christianity justify imperialism?


Europeans felt like it was their moral duty to end slavery and they wanted
to save people's souls by spreading Christianity. Europeans used these to
justify
colonizing already inhabited territory.

How did racial superiority impact nationalism and imperialism?


The theory that white people were superior due to being more
evolved (social Darwinism) convinced white people that they needed to
civilize the "uncivil" since their race was better. Europeans forced their
traditions, culture, and religion onto Africans to assimilate them.

Why were technological/medical advancements so significant for
imperialism?


The abundance of raw materials would not have been known about due
to a lack of expeditions without these advancements. Without
medicine people would
have died and without the technology, it would have been difficult to get
very far on their journeys.

What did King Leopold II King of Belgium do?


He used cruel direct rule against the native people in the Congo basin to
make money from ivory and rubber because they were in high demand in
Europe.

Why did Britain try to acquire more land than its competitors?


Britain wanted to gain potential resources like gold and diamonds, so it
gained as much land as possible to prevent Germany and France from
getting it first.
Also, Cecil Rhodes wanted to build a railway and telegraph line from
Cairo to Cape (end to end).
