Progress in the Early Years Foundation Stage
Communication and language development
Child A quietly listens to an adult when they are speaking to her and she engages well
when spoken to. She demonstrates good understanding and can interact with an adult
using nonverbal communication. Child A shows interest in listening to sounds, songs and
rhymes. She is able to follow simple instructions such as putting the books away in the
box after reading time. Child A is able to clearly say "no" when she doesn't like
something. Despite being mainly non-verbal at playschool, Mum reports that Child A is
very verbal at home using Russian as her main language. English is Child A's third
language and she displays a very good understanding of English at playschool.
Personal, social and emotional development
Child A separates well during drop-off and happily enters Playschool, exploring both inside
and outside. She enjoys her time here. Child A is happy to join in at morning welcome and
circle time and is becoming familiar with Playschool routines and the golden rules. She
maintains focus while participating in adult-led activities.
Child A interacts with adults and will seek the attention of an adult to show them
something of interest. She can communicate when she requires the help and support of an
adult. When an adult shows her how to do something, she will try to imitate the actions.
She also carefully observes and attempts to imitate the actions of other children. She
interacts well with her peers and has begun to participate in some activities. Child A is able
to seek comfort from familiar adults such as her key person when needed.
Physical development
Child A enjoys building with blocks, eg. Duplo blocks, large wooden blocks and small
colourful blocks. She is able to build a tower of four blocks using the small
