Read through the article entitled “Body Ritual among the Nacirema”1 and
then answer the questions below.
1. In what way are your daily routines similar to or different from the
culture being described in this article?
The daily routines of the Nacirema are very unique and far from similar
to my own. One practice of the Nacirema that I thought was similar to
something that I do routinely is how they confide in a practitioner that
they refer to as “the listener”. This practice is one of the least ritualistic
routines that the Nacirema practice, which is most likely part of the
reason I am able to find similarity in it. According to the article, “The
patient simply tells the listener all his troubles and fears, beginning with
the earliest difficulties he can remember” (Miller-Thayer, Ph.D.,
Sorensen, & Ph.D., n.d.). I found that this process is very similar to
therapy. I am someone who routinely sees a therapist, not daily, but I
