WGU DMF3 Task 2 with Complete Solutions
A. Identify each of the following elements described in the scenario:
• Maria is an only child from a biracial family. Her father is African-American while her mother is
Hispanic. It’s not stated weather or not her mother is employed while her father had to relocate
the family due to his employment.
• In her new community Maria is the minority. Both the area and school are predominantly white
with an economic status of middle-class. She also goes from a large city setting to a rural city
setting.
• Being biracial makes Maria stand out from the other kids at her new school. Her clothing choices
differ greatly from the kids which has a negative effect on her time at the new school. Growing up a
large city likely had an impact on her cultural background that is clearly not the same as growing up in
a rural area.
B. Discuss how you, as a teacher, would try to help Maria in a culturally responsive, trauma-informed
way:
If a situation like this occurred in my classroom the first thing, I would do is continue the lesson.
After the lesson I would pull Maria to the side and quietly talk briefly with her about it, trying to get
as much information as possible. After talking with Maria, I would then launch my own investigation
into the social media group collecting evidence to take to either the principle or district board. I
would also make sure to check in with maria multiple times a week at different time intervals.
Communication with her other teachers is also important as I am not able to follow her around the
school to make sure that she is doing okay through the day. Depending on how Maria feels I would
also start out with weekly meetings with her after school to let her vent and talk about things.
Reassuring her that even though things look dark in the moment the sunlight will shine through.
Making sure to let her get her thoughts out and giving positive input when needed.
B.1.a. Justify how the one action from part B1 would effectively address the issue from part B1 in a
culturally responsive and trauma-informed way, including two specific examples.
Letting Maria set the pace for the after-school meetings lets her know that I’m there for her
when she needs me. By letting her do this it also lets her know that I’m not forcing her to do anything
that she doesn’t want to do. By doing the meetings with her it lets her get her thoughts and emotions
out in a safe place without judgment.
2. Discuss two ways you would involve Maria’s family in this action.
