C121 Task 3
A. Discuss three major changes in race relations (i.e., laws, amendments, labor
arrangements, working conditions, migration patterns, socioeconomic changes) that
resulted from Reconstruction (suggested length of 2–3 paragraphs).
The first major change in race relations was the passing of the constitutional amendment that
abolished slavery. Reconstruction reshaped the South by granting slaves freedom and voting rights.
The politically mobilized black community allied with the Northern whites, increasing the power of the
Republican Party in the North. In the South, white southerners resorted to violence and opposition to
supporting black equality and black southerners fell into poverty and unresolved equality issues.
(Norton, 2015)
A second major change in race relations was the restoration of the 11 Union states that had seceded
during the Civil War. The Union helped the south during the Reconstruction, restoring roads, building
schools, and getting farming going again. (Norton, 2015)
Another major change in race relations was the transformation of southern society. Reconstruction
led to resentment and violence among white southerners against black southerners, which led to the
enactment of racial segregation laws. (Norton, 2015)
B. Describe two consequences of industrialization on American politics and/or
society (suggested length of 2–3 paragraphs).
Deterioration of the environment and significant impacts on human health were the results of
pollution to the air, soil, and water ecosystems. This pollution was introduced by machines and
industrial waste during industrialization. (Norton, 2015)
Industrialization lured people looking for a better life into big cities looking for opportunities. Workers
moved to overcrowded urban areas with their families, working long hours under hazardous and safe
work conditions, resulting in workplace tragedies, and unhealthy environments that led to disease
and suffering. (Norton, 2015)
C. Explain the rise of the Progressive movement (suggested length of 2–3 paragraphs) by
doing the following:
1. Describe the role of religion and social morality in promoting Progressive reforms.
The Social gospel led by Protestant ministers brought better conditions for the industrial society
motivated by the effort to improve society’s poor working conditions. The effort was based on
principles of the Gospel member’s faith and their belief in the teachings of Jesus. (Norton, 2015)
